Prenatal Development and Care
Even up to the weeks of a fragile embryo's life, the levels of the hormone cortisol, were present in the brain's amygdala due to major stress and depression from the mother. This will alter the child's brain dramatically which will affect the cortex. The cortex is a thin layer that is sensitive to mental disorders, that can affect the newborn and as they grow older (Nonacs, 2025).,

Early Childhood Experiences
Self-regulation needs to be taught by direct caregivers as soon as their early childhood years begins. Acts such as controlling emotions and how to problem solve in tough situation, has to be done in an environment to where the child can feel comfortable and safe, and with plenty of opportunities to fail and to succeed (Slater, 2021, p. 1)

Impact on Adolescent Social and Emotional Development
Self-regulation is a cognitive process that starts with a foundation, that builds layers as the years progressed. This is why self-regulation is important for the early child development years (Slater, 2021, p. 2).
The cognitive process changes and develops as the child matures. As the years progresses, different skills and strategies need to be taught based on the children current age experiences (Slater, 2021, p. 3).
